What Are Alternative Proteins?

Food groups are one of the first things people learn about in elementary school: You know that you need enough of each group in the food pyramid – enough of the good fats and as little as possible of the bad; enough carbohydrates, sugars, starches and proteins. That’s basic enough. But did you know about alternative proteins? They are taking the culinary world by storm, and they could be just what your diet needs. Here’s more about alternative proteins and why you should care.

What Are Alternative Proteins?

Regular Proteins

Let’s talk about regular proteins. They can most commonly be found in foods like meat, fish and eggs – but there are many reasons why you might want to cut regular proteins out of your diet. Just one of these reasons is following a vegetarian or vegan diet: You have to cut out the traditionally known sources of protein, and what does that leave you with?

Cutting Out Proteins

If you are following a special diet that requires you to cut out proteins completely, that doesn’t leave you with much – and it’s not practical to cut all protein out of your diet. It’s not safe either. Why? Because getting a balanced diet means that your diet needs to contain everything you need – from every part of the food pyramid – even if you have a special diet.

Alternative Proteins

Sources of alternative protein includes quinoa – which is extremely healthy for you and has even earned the name “superfood’ in recent years. You can also find healthy versions of alternative proteins in things like hemp seeds, artichokes, soy milk and green peas; you can also find alternative proteins in oatmeal and pumpkin seeds. You don’t have to cut protein out of your diet completely if you are on a special diet – there are more than enough viable replacements in the form of alternative proteins.
