What to Look for in Gluten Free Labeling?

Have you been diagnosed with a gluten allergy or sensitivity, or do you just want to give up gluten for your own personal reasons?

No matter why you are going gluten-free, you’re going to want to make sure that you read all food labels to make sure you aren’t consuming the protein. Though gluten is an obvious ingredient in many foods, such as:

  • bread
  • pasta
  • rice

There are a lot of foods that seem like they would be gluten free but actually aren’t, such as deli meats, pickles, and even ice cream.

What to Look for in Gluten Free Labeling?

To avoid an adverse reaction, here’s what you should be looking for in food labels.

Wheat, Barley, Malt, or Rye

Food products with these ingredients contain gluten. Make sure you read the entire food label. If you see any of these four ingredients mentioned, put the item back on the shelf.

Check for Lesser-Known Gluten Ingredients

Wheat, barley, malt, and rye are the most commonly known gluten ingredients; however, there are several lesser-known ingredients that also contain the protein. Examples include emmer, atta (a form of chapati flour), emmer and einkorn (forms of wheat), and fu (made from dried wheat). Familiarize yourself with the lesser-known gluten ingredients and check that they aren’t on your food labels.

Contact the Manufacturer

If you aren’t sure if a food product contains gluten, make sure you contact the manufacturer directly. They will be able to tell you for sure if the item you are concerned about contains any gluten. Depending on your needs, you may also want to ask if there is any risk of cross contamination with gluten-based ingredients. If you are allergic or highly sensitive to gluten, eating foods that have even the slightest percentage of gluten could potentially cause an adverse reaction.
